My Top 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Picks!

    August 16, 2020 / No Comments

First, Accept that school is not home. Home is not school. Curriculum in the school setting takes hours. Curriculum in the home setting takes a fraction of that time. Schools use a schedule … homes follow a routine. Digest that, and you'll be ahead of the game!

I am so stoked to introduce you to my old friend Nate Tano. I’ve been following his food posts on Facebook for years and I’m happy to say that I’ve finally found a way to steal some of his recipes! When I started this blog, I wanted to focus on simplicity but from a male perspective — simplicity in the way we live, educate, and eat. I made these over the weekend and holy cow, they’re awesome!

The good news is that planning homeschool actually means learning how to slow down to a crawl, gracefully. If you're in the initial process of de-schooling, this is particularly important.

Teaching at home is, in a way, like teaching in the traditional school setting. By that, I mean a traditional school method fits the institutional setting. The difference is that your home is your school -- it's your classroom. Let's deconstruct five popular methods of homeschooling and how to identify where you should probably begin.

Homeschool: Getting Started in 4 Steps

    July 20, 2020 / No Comments

A month ago, an old teacher friend and I talked about homeschool during COVID and whether or not schooling at home was indeed homeschool or if it was even possible to get started. He was frustrated and grasping for answers like so many parents. States and school districts have offered vague ideas about what school will look like or whether school will exist at all. Maybe it will be delayed? Maybe not? Maybe some will hang out online while some come to the building? Who knows. We’ll figure it out and let you know. Try running a business like that. Worse, try running a family like that.       “Rob, why would you ever homeschool…

    July 15, 2020 / 1 Comment

Every popular television show in the last two decades perpetuated the dorky dad motif — the bumbling, goofy husband who means well but seems essentially incapable of overcoming the shadow of his uber-capable wife. King of Queens, Home Improvement, Everybody Loves Raymond — they all feature the same dad. Not surprisingly, my wife says that the clumsy boy she married tries really hard at being a homeschool dad but is probably making things up as he goes. It’s a circus, she says. And she’s absolutely right. Maybe pop culture has a point? If COVID-19 has a sunny-side, it’s that families are slowly re-acquainting themselves with the home and what it means to be home.  As an August without school…

I'm a dad currently mastering the art of the "hands full" with my four children. A former English teacher and photographer, I've been a homeschool teacher, stay at home dad, and advocate for men in the home-place for almost ten years.
